Pacific Coast Native Hybrid Iris Culture and Care
Native species of iris that grow from Washington to California have been crossbred for their great beauty. Those that we offer are semi-evergreen and hardy (zone 7-8). Require loose soil with good drainage, moisture the first year to establish plant, mulching will help. All are 12 to 15 inches tall blooming in May.
Soil: Lose well drained soil that is slightly acidic. We use a three way mix one part sand one part compost one part old bark.
Water: Keep moist the first year until established. Rain fall the following years will suffice.
Light: Full sun with partial shade in the afternoon.
Fertilizer: Very light application of an acid based general fertilizer once a year in the spring.
Mulching: Two inches of pine or fur bark and needles.
Transplanting: Can only be transplanted when new root growth is occurring late fall or early spring. Established plants should be left alone until a loss of vigor is noticed usually in 4 or 5 years.
Note: Not recommended for areas other than the Pacific Coast from Northern California to Washington.
